Why use this tool

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

Can you unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?

No. This tool needs the correct password. Strong passwords cannot be recovered, so look in your password manager, your email, or ask whoever created the file, or find the original unprotected document.

Is it legal to unlock a PDF?

Unlocking your own files, or files you have been given the password to use, is ordinary. Using a tool to get around protection on documents you are not entitled to open may breach their terms or the law, so only unlock files you have the right to open.

What is the difference between an open password and restrictions?

An open password stops anyone reading the file without it. Restrictions, such as no printing or copying, are separate settings. Our guide on telling whether a PDF is password protected explains how to spot each.

Will unlocking change the pages?

No. The content stays the same; only the password protection is removed in the new copy.

Should I protect it again afterwards?

If the document contains personal or financial information, yes. Store the unlocked copy somewhere secure, or add a new password with the Protect PDF tool once you have finished working on it.
